What’s on my mind is the importance of working with a diverse community of faculty, staff, students, and trainees, and the incredible value that our unique perspectives add to our robust biomedical enterprise.
This year had a troubled start. In January, the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC)’s Midtown Campus was thrust into the public spotlight for the disrespectful discharge of a patient from the hospital following good and appropriate medical care. The incident highlighted the fact that care extends into the discharge process and exit from the hospital.
The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) and UMSOM practice sites are a joint enterprise (UM Medicine). Our faculty physicians provide the medical care at UMMS facilities each and every day. Our patients receive the highest-quality care, grounded in exceptional science. Therefore, when the terribly unfortunate incident came to light, UMMC’s President and CEO, Mohan Suntha, MD, MBA, and his leadership team took immediate action to thoroughly investigate the circumstances, as well as to ensure that this will never happen again.
The young woman’s case reminds us that we care for patients facing complex and challenging medical conditions, and that, as a research-intensive academic medical center, we need to meet those challenges head-on. We are, therefore, incredibly fortunate to work in an environment where diverse, multidisciplinary approaches are employed to tackle the most perplexing diseases and conditions known today. The care that we provide is founded in exceptional basic, translational, and clinical research, all working on concert toward the common goal of dramatically improving health and wellbeing.
Diversity is engrained in the culture and environment of UMSOM. We come from many different backgrounds, cultures, and parts of the world, but here we are all part of the same community. Our School is composed of individuals with a multitude of ideas and perspectives. This blend is a great resource. The mosaic of voices strengthens all of us.
This month we hold our annual Celebrating Diversity Dinner, in which we honor those who understand diversity in the wider context of acknowledging, understanding, accepting, and valuing differences among people. The unique experiences we have from our system of learned and accepted patterns of behaviors in our backgrounds bring together a philosophy of life that is passed on from generation to generation as accepted beliefs, values, and mores from parents, teachers, and society.
Ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity requires that we acknowledge our individual differences and recognize that this country was founded on the principles of a diverse population. Our diverse workforce is a reflection of a changing world and consequences of a changing marketplace. Diverse work teams, whether in a hospital or a research laboratory, bring value to an organization. Diverse talent and diverse skills benefits any workplace and increases our productivity. We are highlighting the outstanding leadership of our faculty in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in this area.
There are four practical reasons why diversity is vitally important in our medical schools:
- Diversity shapes the quality of medical education for all students and provides “culturally competent” physicians who can treat people from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Diversity expands access to medical care for all.
- Diversity in medical research leads to an acceleration of advances in medical and public health research as often times, investigations into medical issues are problems that are rooted in social, cultural, and behavioral determinants.
- Diversity makes good business sense in the health-care industry. A medical staff that mirrors the health-care organization’s clientele is more capable of dealing.
We need to continue this UMSOM tradition of diversity as a hallmark of our institution. We must involve as many people as possible to realize our utmost potential. We need physicians, researchers, and health professionals from every facet of life, from every race, religion, and culture. Our diversity is one of greatest strengths. It is a point of pride and leadership and we should celebrate it. We know that diversity makes us a better School of Medicine — better for learning, for teaching, and for conducting research.

anine Good, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Neurology, founded the first Clinical Informatics Special Interest Group for the American Headache Society. Recently this special interest group sponsored its first course at the National American Headache Society, 2017 Scottsdale Headache Symposium, held in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Good’s talks included “Ins and Outs of Patient Registries/Databases,” “Population Health Management and Impact to Headache Specialist,” “Accuracy of EHR-Derived Diagnoses,” “Leveraging EMG for Headache Diagnosis and Treatment of Pediatric/Adolescent Patients,” and “Telemedicine: Primer for the Headache Specialist.”
Vicki Gray, MPT, PhD, Research Associate, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, was invited to give a Continuing Education course at Elon University in North Carolina titled, “Stroke Rehabilitation” for their DPT graduating class and clinicians. The course was held on December 6 and focused on balance and falls after stroke.
Bret Hassel, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, participated in the first workshop on Holistic Review in Graduate Recruitment hosted at UMCP on December 12. The lectures and hands-on training led by nationally recognized leaders in this field—Dr. Julie R. Posselt and Dr. Casey W. Miller—focused on the importance of non-cognitive measures in graduate admissions with the goal of enhancing the quality and diversity of matriculants. Dr. Hassel is a member of the USM Holistic Review working group.
The 13th Annual Radiation Oncology Symposium—Best of 2017, was held at the University of Maryland BioPark on January 11. The popular one-day symposium was organized by the UMSOM Department of Radiation Oncology, under the leadership of William Regine, MD, the Isadore and Fannie Schneider Foxman Chair, Professor, Department of Radiology, and Executive Director of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center. In addition to distinguished guest speakers, the program included presentations by the following UMSOM faculty: Elizabeth Nichols, MD, Assistant Professor, Adeel Kaiser, MD, Assistant Professor, Pranshu Mohindra, MD, Assistant Professor, and James Snider, III, MD, Assistant Professor. Attendees included radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, medical oncologists, hematologists, residents, nurses, medical physicists, dosimetrists, and physician assistants from across the United States.
Kinjal Sethuraman, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, was the Grand Rounds speaker for the emergency medicine residency at the University of Connecticut in mid-January. The title of her lecture presented at Hartford Hospital was “Emergent Indications for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Saving Vision, Saving Mind.”
Roger Stone, MD, MS, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, and EMS Medical Director, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, served as collaborator, advisor, and co-author for two studies conducted by pre-hospital personnel. The results of those studies were presented as posters at this year’s annual conference of the National Association of EMS Physicians, held in San Diego in January. Captain Jamie Baltrotsky, BS, NRP, presented “Preliminary Impacts of Adding Follow-up Home Visits on Call Volumes Generated by EMS ‘Super-Users’ Enrolled in a New Mobile Integrated Health Protocol” and Lieutenant Timothy Burns, MS, NRP, presented “The AFIRE Trial: Analysis of medication storage TempeRatuREs (AFIRE) in a Modern EMS Fleet.”
Li-Qun Zhang, PhD, Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, presented “Multi-Joint Somatosensory Assessment in Patients Post Stroke” at the Biomedical Engineering Society’s Annual Meeting, which was held in Phoenix, Arizona in October.

The Center for Innovative Biomedical Resources (CIBR) announced the recipients of its 2018 Travel Awards. Regina Harley, Lab Supervisor of the Center for Vaccine Development’s Flow & Mass Cytometry Core, and Ashley Cellini, Manager of the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Pathology Biorepository Core, were selected by committee from a pool of applications and will each receive a $2,000.00 travel award to offset the cost of attending the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF) annual meeting. This annual international meeting is the premier conference for Core Facility directors, staff and administrators.
Richard Eckert, PhD, Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, received the Association of Medical and Graduate Departments of Biochemistry Distinguished Service Award at the 2018 annual meeting in Panama City, Panama. Dr. Eckert has served in multiple leadership roles, including as President.
Cheng-Ying Ho, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology, was honored in December with the 2018 Passano Foundation Clinician-Investigator Award for Career Development from the Passano Foundation and the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Cedric Yu, DSc, FAAPM, the Carl Mansfield, MD, Professor in Radiation Oncology, was named an Engineering Alumni Achievement Award recipient by Washington University.
Michael Winters, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, was selected to receive in April the 2018 AAEM Joe Lex National Educator of the Year Award from the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. This is AAEM’s highest honor for educational excellence and it is the third national teaching award for which Dr. Winters has been selected.

Li-Qun Zhang, PhD, Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, was named as an Associate Editor for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transaction on Biomedical Engineering.
Marianne Cloeren, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine, was invited by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) to serve on a new presidential task force, the Functional Outcomes Task Force. ACOEM will be working closely with the American Psychological Association (APA) to raise the awareness, understanding, and use of function-based treatment protocols aimed at reducing disability in the United States. The task force will address opportunities for including function-oriented treatment protocols in the national health goals embodied in Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and other programs.

Abdu Azad, PharmD, PhD, MPH, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, was awarded a five-year $3,646,790 R01 (for years 35-39) from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for a project titled, “Murine Typhus: Vector Biology and Transmission.”
Wilbur Chen, MD, MS, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, was awarded $79,552 from the Serum Institute of India, to conduct clinical trials of a pentavalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine.
Michelle Pearce, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Family & Community Medicine, and Psychologist, Center for Integrative Medicine, received a two-year, $234,770 grant from the John Templeton Foundation for “Fostering Spiritual and Religious Competencies in Mental Health Care.”
